Josh goes behind the scenes with up and coming band that has a little thing for Portland. Share the love. Support local artists. Happy Tuesday!

POST BY JOSH

What an incredible start to the New Year! It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of February and I feel like so much is happening here in Portland, OR.

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

There’s something big happening….what, exactly?! It’s hard to put my finger on it, but one thing I’m certain of is that I’m not the only one who feels it. Nearly everyone I speak to about it feels it, too. Portland is a melting pot of cultural expression. It’s a utopian city for a vibrant artistic community and it’s clear when speaking to locals that they are a proud community who wouldn’t trade their lifestyle for anything. That’s why I was excited to talk to Little Hurricane at a recent show my band Josh and Mer, played with them at McMinnamin’s Crystal Ballroom.

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

San Diego-based Little Hurricane (an apt description to their explosive blues/rock sound), made their debut at The Crystal Ballroom to a sold out crowd on Feb. 10th, 2012 as part of 94.7fm KNRK’s “I Saw Them When” series. Tone (guitar/keyboards/vocals) and CC (drums/mandolin/vocals) are truly an act whose sum is greater than its parts. Their song “Haunted Heart” is currently featured in regular rotation on KNRK and they are quickly building a steady following as they tour up and down the West Coast.

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

Meredith and I got the chance to talk to Tone and CC in the green room for a bit before the show. They were mellow after a long day of flying, check ins, interviews, a guest appearance on KNRK, and sound checks, but were excited to be in Portland. I asked them if they had spent any time in Portland before and they opened up a little about their beginnings. They explained to Mer and I that when they first started they decided to spend a couple of weeks in some new places networking with other bands, venues, record stores and music lovers.

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

They crashed on friends’ couches, booked shows, and met new friends along the way. I discovered the band had spent nearly a month in Portland getting to know the city and connecting with it on a local level. They expressed their love of Portland and how they enjoyed their time here. It was exciting talking to them about Portland and connecting on our love of the city and its music scene.

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

The time they spent here in Portland is beginning to payoff. Little Hurricane has toured through Portland a number of times, making appearances at hot spots like Doug Fir and each time growing their fan base here and beyond. Perhaps their biggest payoff in Portland since their extended stay happened when they took the stage Feb. 10th at The Crystal Ballroom. The audience erupted at the first site of the duo who rewarded them with a powerful and energetic rock performance.

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

Tone’s wailing guitar was a worthy match to CC’s relentless and aggressive drumming style but the duo were equally adept at a more stripped down style as when CC would pick up a mandolin. Their blend of screaming lead vocals and call and response arrangements were a refreshing take on the blues genre and it’s exciting to watch another young group pick up the blues torch and carry it forward. Standout songs for me were of course their originals “Haunted Heart” (even better live than on the radio) “Homewrecker,” my personal favorite “Give Em Hell,” and a fantastic rendition of Bill Withers’ classic “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

Little Hurricane by Meredith Adelaide

If you missed Little Hurricane at The Crystal Ballroom, not to worry! The band returns on Feb. 21st for another show at Doug Fir. Tickets are $10 advance and $12 the day of the show.

Little Hurricane’s full length album “Homewrecker” is available at Music Millennium.

A little tale of my first experience at a live Moth and the thoughts it provoked within myself. Happy Friday!

It Didn't Come Out Of My Mouth

I shit you not…everything happens for a reason.

Tuesday evening proved it.

I crossed the busy intersections of southwest portland singing,

“Sugar never tasted so good…Sugar never tasted sooo good…Sugar… never tasted… good… to… Me…..Ye-ah.”

Many White Stripes songs haunt me.

Sometimes the words makes me feel brilliant and other times they make me feel mad in the head. Just words. Ha. That is a funny story. Letters spin into words that flip into lines which give birth to pages and end up in a book. Nothing more than a formula to understand the power of words from my view. The point is, words carried me to The Space Tuesday night.

I was presented with a choice. More like a ticket. To slide headfirst into The Moth. A special event that story tellers from all walks of life get 10 unrehearsed minutes to spit a story. There are no notes. Filmed live often. Most likely in front of hefty crowds. Centered on a theme that all speakers have to riff on. The Moth began as an underground movement born out of poetry slams and spoken word battles. Which quickly caught steam…because everything is part of a story in one form or another. I can’t argue with that.

I accepted. What brought me to writing was story telling. I grew up telling the stories of my adventures so I wouldn’t forget them. There has always been a pleasant sting between my ears when I get to assemble a story out loud. Having my buddies hush the mini crowds of people waiting to hear my take on crack heads that had a commune about two football fields from my house on Lost Canyon Road, made me feel like a different person. Storytelling has proved to be my outlet. Sometimes I can’t believe I didn’t write till I was in college.

My point being, I love stories. All. Stories. There is always something to take away. I blame the fact that all words have a substance. I dream about how they all fit together. And in the present moment, I use my pen to sort them out.

I power walked my little ass to the Schnitzer Concert Hall. Was seated in row M. I was right where I wanted to be. I shared Podcast suggestions with my two neighbors that were friends with the brilliant man that offered me the ticket to the show. The man with the golden ticket was shooting stills of the performance. Getting intimate with his targets. I could see him the whole time. Suite and tie, taking in all the brilliance of the story tellers one click of the shutter at a time.

I sat in the crowd feeling overwhelmingly comfortable. The theme for this Moth was walking the line. Stories about balancing acts. Portland had the first Moth heckler that night. I kept Laughing out loud at the silly parts of stories and the speakers personalities expressed through their voices and bodily movements.

We were seeing raw human emotion and expression. And I felt like part of the show by letting myself let loose with engagement in the story. At one point there was mention of a special twist to the Moth that night. Deep in my heart I believed the host would pass the baton to an random audience member or two. And I wanted a crack.

My interest to participate in a Moth was sparked by the first story of the evening. John Grady took us on a journey to the period of his life when he was part of the Blue Man Group. He explained how in love with this job he was at first. Then it become a routine. He found his way out of that routine with a chance encounter with a Blue Man Group audience member.

I ate up his tale of how the meaning of being fearless and having child like innocence was important for him to find again. Where one is present in life and don’t have to manufacture feelings, emotions, expressions and actions. Just got to be. And swing on from there.

After sitting through the entire Moth, I came to the conclusion that this was a challenge being shared with me. Why in the honk couldn’t I tell my story at a Moth? Sometimes I feel better off telling a story this way. To pluck it from my memory bank and riff for what ever amount of time it takes to get through the story. No paper. No pen. No computer. No filter. No notes to throw off my pace and to make me nervous enough that I believe I will forget my own words. To not get the chance to think about what I would say. Just let the words flow. Let me be me, while my heart steers and my gut lets go. Not trying to do anything. All natural. I can taste the fear in it. The point is…that fear is good. Fuel to live.

I aim to tell stories. Even if no one listens. Because I can. And it makes me feel level. The words come to me and they have to go somewhere. It wouldn’t add up to keep them. Why?

Because we are all connected by words. So really none of them are owned.

They are shared.

And,

Shared again.

I was supposed to go to this Moth for a reason. I won’t try to figure that reason out. Its much more fun to shoot up the inspiration floating around the Moth and see where it goes. To the screen. To the page. Into thin air. Across town. Around the world. Who knows. I came for the experience. The glimpse at something magical. To be part of it. But most importantly, to create from it.

Lets call the Moth the kick start to conquering myself.

Truth

Stay Weird,

Elena brightens our hopes for a quick recovery after chilly and soaking times this winter with a peek at Pantone’s Spring 2012 color palette. Happy Thursday!

Spring, to me, is the ultimate time for renewal, refreshment and re-energizing. Especially here in Oregon, the winter can be a little, how can I say this lightly…drab? With grey skies and gloomy rainclouds hovering over us at (what seems like) all times, the winter months can be seriously draining. Luckily, springtime is just around the corner and with it comes an amazingly optimistic color palette to recharge our internal batteries.

With Pantone ‘s (leading authority on color and best known for the Pantone Color Matching System) Spring 2012 colors titled “Solar Power”, “Margarita”, and “Cockatoo” things are starting to look a little sunnier outside… am I right? Not to mention our color of the year, “Tangerine Tango,” which literally makes me feel like dancing. What’s even greater is that the entire palette can be mixed and matched beautifully. That’s what we call a double-whammy, folks! So, kiss the winter blues (except the ones in Pantone’s palette!) goodbye and let’s give spring a warm welcome home…Shall we?
